Explicarea memoriei Cache a unui Personal Computer(PC)

Memoria Cache este o memorie rapidă care serveşte ca zonă tampon între procesor si memoria principală. Cache-ul reţine datele care au fost folosite recent de procesor şi se evită întoarcerea datelor înapoi la memoria principală (care este mai lentă decât ceaCache) şi astfel datele sunt procesate mult mai repede.

Structura memoriei unui computer are 5 sau 6 nivele :

Primele 2 nivele de memorie se găsesc în procesor, sunt compuse din memoria internă a procesorului sau registrii şiL1 cache, care este primul nivel de cache.

Nivelul 3 de memorie este L2 cache şi este tot în procesor (dar înainte se găsea peplaca de bază).

Nivelul 4 este L3 cache. Acest L3 cache a fost L2 cache în placa de bază, dar acumprocesoarele includ L1 si L2 cache şi deci, a devenit L3 cache. Este mai lentă ca procesorul, dar mai rapidă decât memoria principală.

Nivelul 5 (sau 4 dacă placa de bază nu are L3 cache) este memoria principală.

Nivelul 6 este o porţiune din hard disk, numită şi virtual memory şi este folosită de unele sisteme de operare atunci când memoria principală este plină (evident, poate fi folosită şi în paralel cu memoria principală, dar acest lucru depinde de sistemul de operare).

Structura pe 5 sau 6 nivele este făcută pentru a eficientiza procesarea datelor de către procesor şi de a permite sistemului de operare să funcţioneze şi atunci când nivelul memoriei disponibile este scăzut.
